Origins and Ancestry of Australian Shepherds
If we have to describe these cute beautiful creatures in just simple words, we may say that they are just the same as the simple shepherd dogs in terms of characteristics. Only the size differs.
However, when talking about the origins of this breed, we must take our start with the origins of standard size Australian shepherds. This breed was officially bred in the United States.
Although, despite from this information, it is also said that its origins can also be traced back to the breeding work of the Basque country, in Western Europe. Whilst some time was spent in Australia, the Australian shepherd was then developed in America.
Shepherd dogs are used as work dogs and also, they were highly valued by the stockmen.
When smaller dogs, during 1960’s became more popular in the world, the breeders just began to recreate these dogs into a smaller size. The breeders have initially integrated 11 different breeds of dog, in order to recreate Miniature Aussie Shephard breed.
These dogs vary from cupcake to miniature sizes, with “toy” size being in the middle.
So now, you are just aware of the story of the Australian shepherd, that how they started.
Now let’s have a brief look at this wonderful breed……..
The Toy Australian Shepherd has a medium length coat. It comes in blue or red Merle, red or black tricolor, all with white and tan markings. Hairs around the ears and eyes should not be white.
The coat may be straight or slightly wavy. They also should have feathering on the back of their legs, and a mane and frill around their neck.
The hair on the head and front of the forelegs and on the outside of the ears is shorter than the rest of the coat. The hindquarters are of the same length as the forequarters. The top of the skull is quite flat and clean cut.
The feet are oval and compact. The lips of toy Australian dog do not hang over the lower jaw.

When we talk about the temperament of this wonderful dog breed, we just find out that it’s extremely easygoing and friendly. The toy Australian shepherd extremely active, just like it’s ancestor shepherds.
One more interesting thing about them is, that they are extremely awesome family dogs and enjoys to play around with active children. Apart from that, you should also know that its behavior can become destructive if it’s left alone for a long time.
It need’s some good time from its owner and family to keep it’s mind fresh and active. They just need a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and “easily” bored.
One more important thing you just need to do about its temperament is to socialize it well, in order to avoid your Toy Australian Shepherd becoming suspicious of the strangers.
You know, shepherd dogs will always like to herd. The same problem is with these dogs, they just like to herd even if it’s small animals or children of their family. For this purpose, they will even nip the heels of people in order to herd them.
Well, they just need to be taught not to herd people as it’s not acceptable. A fine companion, it always enjoys working small stock. We may not hesitate to say that the Toy Australian Shepherd is a cute little fine worker.
Remember that dogs are canines, not humans. So make sure to meet their natural instincts as animals.
The miniature or toy Australian Shepherd will just do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently Exercised. They are actually moderately indoor dogs and can live in a small yard. Moreover, it can do well in cold climates.
When it comes to the matter of exercise, it can be a little difficult for an owner who just doesn’t jog because they need a daily long walk, which for someone who goes for jogging daily or a morning walk is easier.
This energetic and extremely active dog needs a plenty of vigorous exercises to stay in shape, or better yet, for some serious work to do.
There aren’t a lot of health concerns about these dogs. But as we know, every creature has its own weak point, so is the case in Toy Australian Shepherds. The gene for the beautiful merle coloration also carries a blind/deaf factor.
This can only be just expressed in Merle/Merle crosses. Well, most of the American Miniature Australian Shepherds are heterozygous merles and these merles are not at risk of any special health problems due to their coloration.
All you need to do is just to make sure that you check the hearing on merle puppies. Hip and eye problems can mostly occur. Ensure sire and dam of the puppies have been tested and certified clear prior to purchasing a puppy.
One of the most important things is, some of these dogs carry a gene known as MDR1 which makes them sensitive to certain drugs. And if those medicines are provided to them, it may become the cause of their death.
Homecare of Toy Australian Shepherd
These beautiful dogs have nice curly hairs but it’s not too long that you will have a need to cut them. Well, it doesn’t need a lot of grooming products. They just need to combed once a week, it will be more than enough for them.
The Australian Shepherd breed shed its hair twice a year so they are pretty standard as compared to other dog breeds.
It will be just enough to say that you should not worry about the grooming of this dog, They just don’t need it that much.
The ideal home condition for Toy Australian Shepherd
If we talk about an ideal home for the Toy German Shepherds, first of all, we would just say that they need a home where they are loved unconditionally. What you’ll just need to do is to provide quality time to them.
They need to run around and they like outdoors, so an apartment will not be the best choice for them to live in. They need an owner who can give them love and attention, who can play with them all the day and care for them.
If you are a busy person than this breed is not for you. You’ll need to have them on long walks, playing with them all the, give them so much attention just like a child. If you are up for this, then it can be the best pet for you, you can find anywhere.
